How often does femininity
Become synonymous with fragility?
Puissance gets painted pink
And mocked to the ground like dirt
You needn’t look far for contradiction
For the strength in beauty
For the grace in vulnerability
For becoming unmoored from your life source
And still, rising with the wind.
For drawing eyes to your corolla, blushing, paper-thin,
While you cluster with your sisters, uncompromising.
For being trodden into the soil
But persisting in retaining your poise.
There is a reason flowers are seen as womanly, girl-like, feminine.
There is a reason cruel hands will itch
To tear them from their home and crush them.
There is a reason some flowers carry thorns.
There is a reason some don’t need to.
Some fight with ammunition, some with a quiet mystery.
They might die in your palms, or at your feet
But they remain etched in your memory.
They might be fleeting, an ephemeral sight
But they evoke enough worship, and carry enough might,
That swathes of humanity will stop and wonder
At how something so fragile could hold so much splendour.
