Recycled Craft Projects

This summer has seen the start of a small recycle friendly craft time for some families we know. I was debating whether or not to put my son into an art class but then had the idea to create an art class focusing on using recycled material which allowed for friends to enjoy crafts and socialize while growing creativity in multiple children and saving money! After searching on Pinterest for a few weeks, I was able to find some great crafts that take little to no extra supplies. Granted I had some general supplies going into this including craft paper, hot glue, scissors, string, and crayons. If you are planning these crafts with others, ask them if they have any of the supplies you need before going out to buy your own. Also, have others bring their recycling if you don’t have all you need for a specific craft. Here is a few of the craft we have done/plan to do. I hope these ideas encourage you into a lower waste craft time and opens the door to be creative in your own way.

Leaf art — collect leaves (this was fun to do together) to use as the bodies of animals, people, or scenes. Glue onto paper (recycled or craft paper) and use markers, googly eyes or other parts of nature to add extra dimensions to them.
Supplies — paper, leaves of different shapes and sizes, glue, markers, googly eyes.

Paint and stamps — make editable paint with one part flour, one part water, salt and natural food coloring. I found making a warm salt water solution (I didn’t measure, but you can find recipes) and adding that to the flour made for the smoothes paint. We then used cookie cutters to cut out shapes from sliced potatoes to make stamps, as well as lettuce base and bell pepper slices as flower stamps and cardboard tubes shaped into hearts and leaves for additional stamps.
Supplies — Flour, water, salt, natural food coloring, veggies and cardboard tubes

Cardboard triangle chains — cut triangles out of thin cardboard (like cereal boxes) then put two holes in the top of the triangles. Children can thread a string through the holes and make a chain as long as they like. You can then write on the chain or color them.
Supplies — cardboard, scissors, string, hole punch, markers

Bottle top game/bottle bottom crafts — This one is awesome because you get two crafts out of one bottle. Cut the first 3–4 inches off of a soft plastic bottle. Tie a string to the top of the bottle and tie a bead to the other end, creating a fun game for kids to try and get the bead into the bottle. The bottom half of the container can be made into a bird feeder, an octopus or used as a planter.
Supplies — soft plastic bottle, string, bead, scissors
