MAYFLOWER COMPACT

They prepare to set sail bound for a New World. Under the rule of King James, there was condemning religious scrutiny. 102 separatists, who called themselves God’s chosen people and Pilgrims, landed in Cape Cod. They helped establish Plymouth Colony, where they signed the Mayflower Compact.
EXT. DOCK-NIGHT
GEORGE SOULE
Susanna, pull the rest of these bags down by the dock. And do it quickly.
SUSANNA
Yes, Father. Is there something wrong, Father? Why are you whispering?
GEORGE SOULE
Be quiet, Susanna. The King’s soldiers will hear us and imprison all of us if they catch us. Quickly now. Make no haste my child.
MARY SOULE
George, please. You’re scaring her. She’s moving as quickly as she can. Susanna, we will be fine. You do not need to worry about what your father is saying. He is just excited about this new voyage.
Suddenly, what sounded like rumbling thunder, horse hooves pounding on the ground, the King’s soldiers came charging towards the pilgrims.
SOLDIER
Charge! Halt you delinquent imbeciles. In the name of King James!
GEORGE SOULE
Run! Leave everything. We must make it aboard the ship and secure the doors before they get to us. Mary! Children! Hurry!
INT. BOW OF SHIP
The Soule family and the rest of the Pilgrims dropped everything and ran to the ship as fast as they could. They made it to the dock and in the bow of the ship. The Pilgrims released the anchor and they took off without any harm from the King’s army. New freedoms were on the horizon.
SUSANNA
Father, I am frightened. I do not understand why those soldiers were after us. Did we do something wrong?
GEORGE SOULE
We did not do anything wrong in the eyes of the one and only, the Alpha and the Omega, the true King. We are God’s chosen people and we are here to serve a purpose. We have a divine purpose that is higher than any earthly king. The King of England will not allow us to serve God the way we choose. Their church is ritualistic and God tells us to come before Him as we are. Because we can not practice our faith freely, we face prosecution by King James if we stay in England.
MARY SOULE
None of that matters now. God protected and guided our path onto this ship. We are safe and can continue on our journey to find the new land to praise and worship our Savior the way He intended.
After a close call, the Pilgrims set sail in search of religious liberation. Their planned destination was the Colony of Virginia. The voyage took 66 days, but instead of Virginia, they landed in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
EXT. SHIP DECK
MARY SOULE
It is quaint out here on the water. The sea is calm and tranquil.
GEORGE SOULE
We do not face grave danger from the persecution of King James anymore. However, we are not out of harm’s way. The sea’s tranquility could be the calm before the storm.
MARY SOULE
George, you are always so pessimistic.
GEORGE SOULE
Not pessimist, Mary. I am realistic. We will be travelling for many days, treading through some dangerous waters. However, I do have hope that God will protect us through our journey.
SUSANNA SOULE
Regardless, I am excited to see the New World. Not knowing who or what awaits our arrival is worrisome, and yet, I am enticed to believe this will be a bountiful excursion. Your bravery, Father, and Mother’s strength are encouraging and liberating. I can only hope to be half the person you both are.
GEORGE SOULE
Daughter, you will be more than us. The fire that lies deep within your soul will be the internal fortitude that will inspire your generation and the generations after you to seek liberation and freedom for all. Your descendants will be just as resilient as you. You have your mother’s heart and my soul.
The long journey from England continued. Nine weeks of a peaceful journey allowed the separatists to concentrate on the planned establishments upon arrival.
SUSANNA SOULE
Mother, I am starting to feel sick. I feel dizzy and nauseous. I hope I am not coming down with any illnesses.
MARY SOULE
You must rest. Relax on your bed and close your eyes. I will bring you some tea.
INT. SHIP BEDROOM
Susanna puts her head on her pillow.
SUSANNA SOULE
Mother. Have you looked at the sky? It was clear and now it is grey with dark clouds. Isn’t that peculiar?
MARY SOULE
I had not noticed. Rest your eyes, Susanna. We need to make sure you are well for the rest of this journey. We do not have much time left on this voyage.
The boat starts rocking and the waves become more jagged. Within a few moments, there is thunder and lightning.
SUSANNA SOULE
Mother, I am not ill with any disease! It is these waves that are making me nauseous. The boat is rocking back and forth. There is water splashing into the boat.
WILLIAM BRADFORD
All hands on deck! Man the wheel! There is a storm approaching. Steer into it. Do not go around it. We cannot outrun this storm.
EXT. SHIP DECK
MARY SOULE
George! What do we need to do? Can we get through this?
GEORGE SOULE
You and Susanna go take cover and get out of the rain. We planned on travelling all the way to the Colony of Virginia, but the voyage will have to end early. Plans have changed.
WILLIAM BRADFORD
Turn the wheel left! Sharp turn! Harder! Into the eye!
GEORGE SOULE
I see a dim light, William! I believe we are approaching land.
WILLIAM BRADFORM
Prepare the anchor. With no haste! Land is approaching quickly. We are going to have to stop the boat here if we want to survive.
The separatists approached land perplexed at their unknown destination.
GEORGE SOULE
This is not the planned destination. This is not the Colony of Virginia. This land will have to do, as it would be unwise to continue any further.
MARY SOULE
This will be just fitting. With due diligence, we can create colonies and domains for people wanting to worship God freely. Will we be under any scrutiny from the King of England, George?
GEORGE SOULE
Because this is not the original destination that was agreed, the King of England and no other man has the power to command us. The rest of the Pilgrims and I proclaim that we are liberated. We will make a compact to create regulations for the order of this establishment.
WILLIAM BRADFORD
I will write out an agreement that will be called The Mayflower Compact and many of us will sign it. It is written as follows:
“In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord, King James, by the Grace of God, of England, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, e&. Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually in the Presence of God and one of another, covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the General good of the Colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In Witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the eleventh of November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord, King James of England, France and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth. Anno Domini, 1620” (Mayflower Compact, 2013, p.1).
I dedicate this to my mother, Barbara Patterson, as she is a descendant of George Soule and his daughter Susanna Soule. My mother not only maintains the same Christian faith and values, but the same determined and fighting spirit as her dedicated grandfather. This compact was the first agreement for self-government in America.
