A new future for music collaboration.

Music is an important part of my life, as it is for many people. How and where that music is created doesn’t concern everyone, but if you are recording musician or creator of sound in its many forms, choosing the platform that suits your creative process and work flow is paramount. Online options are still limited, and not don’t currently offer all the features and options that you would find on a traditional installation based program, but what is in offer is still impressive. The focus of this article will be the Cakewalk digital audio workstation (or DAW) by BandLab and will provide an overview a couple of the benefits of the online format. For those who are unfamiliar with DAW’s, they are essentially a recording studio for your personal computer.

I think the first really exciting feature this DAW offers is the ability to record absolutely anywhere you can get a WiFi signal. The large majority of Cakewalks competitors are unwieldy beasts and therefore are not suited to the little computer in your pocket. The online hosting means this is no longer an issue. You can record an idea right there and then and not worry about forgetting it before you have the opportunity to sit down in front of your laptop. Even if you don’t have the instrument that you intend to record with to hand, you can get an idea down, work on other parts and then re-record that initial idea at home. That’s pretty great. Thanks, internet!

Next up. At the current juncture the large majority of DAW’s are still installed directly on your hard drive. As I touched on previously, these programs are incredibly powerful and inevitably that takes up space on your hard drive and requires a substantial amount of RAM to to keep everything running smoothly. That doesn’t even account for the music that you will create along the way. Of course, there is always the option of an external hard drive to store the projects you work on, but those cost money. Cakewalk offers more than the ability to record your ideas, though. Not only will the actual program free up valuable space on your hard drive due to its online platform, but all your projects are stored on the cloud relieving you of the need to spend your hard earned cash on the aforementioned external hard drive. Bonus.

Not needing additional storage is great, but that’s not the only benefit that the online project hosting offers. Any one of your projects can be forked (cue endless puns), so that you can collaborate with musicians across the globe and create any number of arrangements for a single idea with ease. Sharing projects like this has been possible before, but with extra steps and no centralised platform to host and collaborate on those ideas. It is in essence a cross between a traditional DAW and a social media platform that allows you to find an endless number of collaborators (or new best friends) across the globe.

On top of the benefits mentioned above but unrelated to the web-hosted theme, this DAW is somehow completely free to use. In 2020 when many of us need to be prudent with our finances and maybe (if we are lucky) have too much time on our hands, Cakewalk offers a way to record your music and do it affordably.

To wrap up, Cakewalk is a pretty interesting take on a DAW. It may not offer some of the features of it competitors as yet, but the ability to record on the go, access your projects anywhere, collaborate with anyone in the world, as well as being free make it stand out from its peers. There will be more that follow this lead, and over time the features on offer will grow and improve, and who knows, maybe one day all our music will be recorded this way.
