Off the Rooftop

This small metal cage rises floor by floor. My blurry reflection looks back at me on the silver metallic wall. The only noises are the whirring of the metal wires as they pull the elevator up, and the light whooshing of my breath through my one clear nostril. As it passes through the last floor, the metal mechanisms make a clank sound before the cage comes to its destination. One more moment of hesitation passes before it comes to a complete stop and the reflective metal door slides slowly out of the way. As the fresh air and greyed sunlight flood the small elevator, I move out in a hurry to get to the class I’m tardy for. Before I can move further, I’m drawn back by a grey-lined sky that captured the corner of my eye.

A moment ago, I found myself heading to class, the next I am slowly creeping up on a scene that is slowly being blown away by the autumn wind. As I look out over the roof of the building, I scan over the darkened earth that is complimented by its lighter sky. Darker puffy clouds dot the sky like a paint splatter on a painter’s mock. The sun behind the grey colored clouds illuminates the vibrancy of the sky. In the far distance, the outline of the skyline marks the separation of earth and heaven, the separation of dark and light. If I look closely enough I can see the tears of the clouds falling to the ground. The autumn wind pushing to an angle that defies gravity’s natural pull. The same wind that is gently pushing on the fabric of my jacket, causing chills to run up my spine. As the realization to class begins to hit, I turn away from the picturesque scene and return to reality.
