I used to be a terror when it came to dirty dishes in the sink. In fact, I was such a terror that my kids were afraid of me. They knew exactly what time I came home from work every day and by that, I mean exactly what time the kitchen needed to be clean. If I came home early and found dishes in the sink I literally freaked out.

I thought that having a clean kitchen and all the dishes put away in the dishwasher was important to my happiness.

Until I learned something new that changed my life.

Our experiences do not create our thinking. Our thinking creates our experiences. All of them!

I am pointing to the fact that it is our thinking that creates each of our experiences in every moment.

It was not the kitchen that was creating my experience of anger and frustration, it was my thinking about the kitchen that created my experience of anger and frustration.

I know, it seems like the kitchen. I was fooled too. But here is the evidence: The state of the kitchen was not bothering anyone else in my house. Only me. So, it couldn’t have been the kitchen. It could only have been my thinking about the kitchen.

And we get fooled all the time!
