Why You Should Ignore the Diet Gurus

One size does not fit all

You know those clothing items labeled ‘one size fits all’? As if that’s possible. How can one item fit everyone? It can’t. Those items should more accurately be labeled, ‘one size fits a few’.

I’ve been immersed in the nutrition and wellness space for about 15 years now, ever since I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease. And I’ve noticed something that’s equally true regardless of which diet philosophy you adhere to.

Everyone thinks THEIR diet is the ‘best’ diet. That it will work for EVERYONE, because, well, it worked for them. That’s all the evidence they need. Never mind the pesky issue of bio-individuality.

‘Plant-based.’ You see this term a lot lately. This way of eating emphasizes whole, unprocessed plant foods and may or may not exclude animal products. It’s similar to the vegan diet-no animals or animal products whatsoever.

At the other end of the spectrum, there’s the carnivore diet, which is as opposite of plant-based and vegan as it gets. Zero plants. Nothing but the animal, the whole animal.

And of course, there’s everything in between. Keto, paleo, Mediterranean, low fat, low carb-I’m sure I’m missing a few hundred.

And let’s not forget intermittent fasting. This used to be referred to as the time between dinner and breakfast…you know, when you’re asleep? But now there’s a fancy name for it, along with a guilt trip if you’re doing it ‘wrong’.

Come on people. Have we lost all common sense? (Don’t answer that.)

News flash: the best diet for you is the one that makes you feel GOOD.

Especially one who’s never met you! However, working with a health coach or nutritional therapist who works alongside you to help you reach your goals can be extremely helpful and cut way back on time spent on trial and error.

This professional will work with you to create a sustainable plan to get you from where you are today to where you’d like to be, taking into consideration your health history, personal preferences, and any obstacles you might be facing that could be impeding your progress.

A cookie-cutter plan will work for some, and definitely won’t for others. Why waste your precious time on this planet waiting to see which group you’re in? Investing in your health is the best investment you could ever make, hands down. I speak from experience.

Have a beautiful and healthy week, and invest in yourself today!
