My Brother is Dying

Questions.

I spoke to my brother today
Our conversation brief
He is on drugs for his cancer
And is sick and has no relief.

I write in rhyme as it gives me time
To process my thoughts and move on
It’s a way I can cope after we spoke
In a cadence much like a song.

I’ve lost other friends, and their ends
They took them just like a thief
Once they have gone, I carry on
And the loss is connected to grief.

That is not so for my brother
His diagnosis a long time ago
Treatment for two types of cancer
And an outcome most of us know.

The pain he feels makes his head reel
He feels tired, sick, and depressed
And like a gust, his feelings of trust
Have gone and he’s feeling possessed.

All of this pain begs questions
We hold on and don’t want to give in
Even with the pain and torment
There is a feeling that we could win.

The devil is in the detail
A dichotomy etched in the soul
And when is the time of acceptance?
That life has taken its toll.

I’ve been by myself for eons.
And have gotten to know who I am
When faced with these eternal questions
I am my monogram.

We all have our ways of coping
Only we know what is best
It knows when and then again
The answers to life's fickle test.

I’ll never know the answers
Till I reach the day
They say its the day of reckoning
When all questions have drifted away.
