COOL HUNTING

A classic and much often discussed example of this trickle-up effect is the T-shirt. From humble beginnings, the T-shirt has become an icon in the fashion world, whether you follow the current trends or not, you will no doubt have a few if not many T-shirts in your wardrobe. The T-shirt did not debut on the catwalk or in a designer boutique, it started out as a practical garment worn by workmen and men in the military as a comfortable and functional undergarment. Becoming increasingly popular among the working class until its integration as a cult and fashion icon when films such as ‘Rebel Without A Cause’ and ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ cemented the T-shirts position into popular culture. The T-Shirt has become not just a fashion and cultural icon, but also a message board, where slogans, symbols and logos broadcast messages directed to the wider audience of popular culture, or focused on subcultures, politics, economics, social issues and many more. An example here displays the T-shirt’s status in popular culture by appearing on the runway, whilst displaying slogans displaying the message a designer wants to convey to their audience.

The Trickle Down Theory, first coined in 1899 by American economist and sociologist, Thorstein Veblen in his book The Theory of the Leisure Class, discussed the idea the fashion worn by the upper class were then imitated by the lower class. To function, the Trickle Down Theory relied upon hierarchical society and the desire to move up the social ladder. Not only was this evident in history but continued into the haute couture with “knock-off” designer labels being sold to lower class consumers. However, with the shift from high culture to popular and sub- culture as the main influence on fashion trends, the way in which fashion distributed itself throughout the different classes of society is also changing; the introduction of the Bubble Up Theory.“Instead of trickle-down, bubble-up. Instead of the bottom end of the market emulating the top end, precisely the reverse.”
