Nature has many bounties. If we live a natural life it will be worthwhile. Usage of clay or earthen pots is one step closer to Mother Nature.

Clay is the component of soil. Many ancient civilizations used it for different household purposes. Wikipedia mentions clay as alkaline soil and plastic in nature. These are the properties of clay.

· Alkaline

All the foods and drinks lie between a range of acidic and alkaline nature. Lemon is acidic, and Cucumber is alkaline. Clay and earthen pot are alkaline.

· Plasticity

Clays are plastic, means that it can be molded into any shape. Clay, with water, is used to form pottery of different shapes and kinds.

Clay is the primary layer of the earth and it is available almost everywhere. Basically, Clay reformation takes time from gradually chemical rocks. Clay is in abundant on earth and can be found in the soil.

Clay or earthen pots when used for cooking, drinking and storage purposes reduces the acidity level of victuals (food and drink), as clay is alkaline in nature.

Rachna Jain (B.Tech in Food Processing and Engineering) explained many benefits of clay utensils on the Quora platform. She stated that cooking in clay pot results in steam circulation throughout utencil. The cooked food in clay pot remains moist. As more steam circulates, which helps in cooking, oil usage is reduced.

Sarika Rana pointed out the scientific research work published on Food.ndtv.com about cooking in clay pottery. Research states that clay pottery results in less evaporation rate and the food is cooked deeply and is tastier as compared to cooking in metal utensils.

Clay is heated resilient and has microscopic holes, from which evaporation takes place. If clay container is used for water storage and drinking, the water will be naturally cool. Such water supports proper heart functioning and very useful for sensitive throats.

Clay or earthen utensils add back the mineral deficiency of victuals and try to absorb the excess minerals.

As have many advantages, clay also has few ignorable disadvantages.

Cooking in clay pots is slow as clay resist heat.

Cooking in clay pots might affect the taste of food because they have microscopic holes, in which previously cooked food particles might be stuck and effects the current cooking taste.

Clay or earthen pots might show cracks over the time of usage. This cracking can be avoided in the beginning if proper seasoning is done before the first cooking or usage and precautions are taken.

Before the first cooking, proper seasoning is required. I had watched some videos on youtube namely “I am a big foodie” etc. and viewed some web pages regarding seasoning which includes “healthy-cookware.com”. Properly baked clay utensil should be soaked for few hours in water, and they should be left to dry up properly. After dried, the edible oil massage should be done at the inner bottom of the utensil with bare hands.

After that, the clay utensil can be filled with water and utensils should be placed on stove till reaches the boiling point. This act of boiling water will extract impurities from clay.

Clay pottery should not be empty and placed on the stove before cooking, as it might start to crack. There should be some food or water in it.

Never place hot clay utensil on cool surface or water. As it might also result in cracking.

Try to avoid washing clay utensil with detergent or soap, as clay is porous and will accumulate chemicals in it. Try to wash it with hot water and brush.

Indeed nature is man’s best friend.
