Real Madrid survive the Elche scare

Elche were minutes away from exacting revenge against Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday afternoon, having been knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Los Blancos in midweek, but in the end, they had to make do with a point.

Lucas Boye gave Elche the lead in the latter part of the first half before Pere Milla doubled their advantage in the 76th minute, but two goals in 10 minutes from Luka Modric and Eder Militao saw Real Madrid salvage a draw.

The game got off to a good start, with Elche showing a lack of fear at the Bernabeu as they pressed the Real Madrid players high up the pitch. There was some bad news for Los Franjiverdes, though, as Tete Morente had to go off injured in the 24th minute, with Fidel Chaves coming on in his place.

Real Madrid were able to take advantage of Elche’s brave approach, as they counter-attacked with regularity, but Edgar Badia had a terrific first half in goal. However, it did seem as though Los Blancos were going to grab a first-half lead through Karim Benzema after Vinicius Junior was brought down in the area by Helibelton Palacios, but the Frenchman’s effort went over the bar.

Then, nine minutes later in the 42nd minute, Lucas Boye scored to give Elche the lead. Fidel put in a wonderful cross from the left that was met by the head of Boye, who found himself in acres of space and simply guided his effort past Thibaut Courtois.

There was an immediate reaction from Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the second period, yet in the 58th minute, there was concern around the Bernabeu as Benzema had to go off injured, with it appearing to be a hamstring injury. Luka Jovic then came on to replace him.

Just as it appeared as though Real Madrid were going to increase the amount of pressure they were putting Elche under, Pere Milla doubled the away team’s advantage. Lucas Boye displayed some excellent skill and then picked out Milla, who kept his composure before firing across Courtois to make it 2–0 with 14 minutes to go.

Casemiro almost immediately saw his header hit the crossbar and go over once play resumed, and in the 81st minute, Milla was correctly adjudged to have handled David Alaba’s flicked header from a corner. Luka Modric stepped up in Benzema’s absence and cut the deficit to one goal.

Real Madrid frantically tried to grab a late equaliser, and it eventually came via Eder Militao in the second minute of four minutes stoppage time.

Vinicius got the better of Palacios down the left and his cross was met by Militao, who rose highest to head past Badia.

Los Blancos now find themselves four points ahead of second-placed Sevilla, but Elche will feel hard done by to have come away from this game with only a point.
